Defrosting food in your microwave
Microwave ovens are ideal for defrosting frozen meats, poultry and fish. Thawing foods in your new Samsung microwave is much safer than leaving it to defrost on your countertop because it eliminates almost all of the bacteria that can grow and cause food poisoning when sitting out. While almost all modern microwaves come with a defrost setting, not everyone uses it, and when they do, they may not use it correctly. Here are some tips to ensure quick, easy and safe thawing of foods in your microwave:
- It is imperative to thaw on the “defrost” setting or at a low heat (30 to 50% power) otherwise you risk the undesirable situation where parts of the meat are cooked while other parts are still frozen. Defrost, at these settings, for 8 to 10 minutes per pound.
- Remove food from the store packaging before defrosting and place it on a microwave safe dish. Foam trays or plastic wraps can melt and pass on harmful chemicals to the food.
- Stop the microwave every couple of minutes to rotate the food if your microwave does not have a rotating plate. Individual pieces, such as chicken breasts, should be broken apart when soft enough. This will ensure the food is evenly thawed.
- Cook foods immediately after defrosting. Partially cooked foods are a breeding ground for bacteria.
- Defrosted foods should be completely cooked before refreezing.
