Temperature: Well, I live in Florida so I purchased this thermous to keep my drinks cool; and if you know anything about black cars and water bottles during the summer heat in any sub-tropic region, then you'll know that within an hour any water in a black car will be hot enough to scald your mouth. This thermous has repeditively kept my water at a refreshing 40 or so degrees after 2-5 hours in a black car. Now I might want to warn you that the outside of the thermous is often too hot to hold comfortably, but the water on the inside is always, always still very, very cold. Taste: None. The Nissan thermous gives off no metallic taste that I can detect. Cleaning: I have not washed the thermous in the dish washer as it is cautioned against both online and in the product's manual. So instead I followed the advice of another reviewer and have found their method simple and effective. All that is needed is a little dish soap and some hot water. 1)Pour a small amount of dish soap into the thermous 2)Pour in some hot water 3)Cap the thermous with your hand and shake vigorously 4)Rinse with water several times So far this method has worked well, including one instance where I accidentally left water in it partially uncapped for two days. The smell was unbareable, but after washing it as usual there was no smell whatsoever. Overall strength of design: It seems to of held up rather well for the five weeks I've had it so far. However, contrary to many of the reviews I've read about it, it does dent. If dropped slightly off kilter of the center, from nearly any height, onto a hard surface, it will dent. However, if dropped on its side it seems that it only scratches minorly. Oh yes, and it does scratch if you're rough on your stuff like I am. But I personally like the look. I also would like to mention that I use this thermous in a salt water environment regularly and I've had no rust issues to-date. Though I would recommend washing in fresh water after the fact. Manufacturer: If your into the whole boycott of products made in China, then I'm afraid you will have to search elsewhere, because this, like pretty much everything else nowadays, is made in China. Conclusion: Though I was disappointed that the thermous is not 'invincible' like I've seen claimed, I am extremely happy with its ability to keep my water cold.

I love this thermos. Unlike most products I buy, I actually read the directions on this one. I fill it with hot water while I'm getting ready in the morning, then fill it with coffee before leaving for work. I ride my motorcycle about 20 miles each morning with the thermos strapped to the back and my coffee is still piping hot when I get to my desk. I would definitely buy it again.

I'm giving this 2 stars just for its looks. It is a nice-looking thermos but so far has not proven any better at keeping things hot than any other one on the market. I poured boiling water into the thermos, sealed it and let it sit for 20 minutes or so. I emptied the water, put a filter cone filled with coffee on top and poured boiling water through that into the thermos. Sealed it up, took it to work, had a small cup of coffee. About 5 hours later, mid-afternoon, I poured what was not really hot coffee for a 2nd small cup and when I went to freshen that it was totally luke warm. I suppose I could buy a little coffee maker, brew the coffee in that and pour that straight into the thermos, but doing it the way I am, which may inherently result in less hot coffee, is simpler and how I want to prepare it. Seems like, even brewing it the way I am, should stay much hotter, much longer.

I saw this item in a mail order catalog a year or two ago and got one. It is made by a well known manufacturer and has been available for a few years - yet almost nobody knows about it! I've yet to encounter a barrista who has ever heard of it. In fact, one tried to pour the latte from the paper cup into the metal sleeve. Why Starbucks doesn't sell these is a mystery to me. Really great product!

I bought my first one of these about 4 years ago and just love it. It works well with the 16 or 20 oz paper cups from major coffee chains and keeps them hot for up to an hour in some cases. Also you don't need a paper sleeve to keep from burning yourself. I love mine because then I can make coffee at home (much better stuff than at the office) and put it in my paper cup and slide it in this holder. My coffee is still hot at work and everywhere in between. Then when the coffee is gone throw away the cup and NO CLEANING is needed. These are hard to find in stores so I have had to order online a couple of times to give to friends who are Starbucks addicts, they LOVE them. No this doesn't get rid of paper cups but it does make them easier to use and you don't end up with cold coffee as often.

I have used this cup insulator for years and I keep ordering more because my friends want them. They keep my coffee hot for hours. You just slide your coffee cup with the lid on it right into it and when your done, throw the cup away. No having to wash it our each time because it doesn't get dirty. It really keeps things hot or cold for a long time. I have no idea why stores don't carry them.

I have been using this tumbler since the days when it was listed as a Thermos product. It has changed little in that time, though it now doesn't have the mid-body rubber grip surface that it once had for a softer and more secure hold. (Its a loss to take it away, too.) I can also compare it to the more popular Nissan "Ultimate" tumbler, since I bought one when I thought I'd lost this gem. Of the two, I much prefer the JMT401 for its handle-free design, and for the 360-degree sip capability. The handle of the Ultimate is a less comfortable grip, and it requires you to crank the wrist and to grip a smaller handle. You can't get away from the handle on the Ultimate, either, because you can only sip from the prescribed site. This tumbler keeps liquids hot for as long as the Ultimate--and both of them are very, very good for such a compact unit. Cheers!

I've happily owned this mug for many months after a friend recommended it. I never had a problem with it but I believe the low rating and reviews come from some misunderstandings about the product and the Thermos name. Perhaps when people see the name, "Thermos", they are reminded of the quality flasks they make. Even though this is a travel mug, the Thermos name can lead to confusion with people thinking it works like a sealed flask. It isn't. It's a mug. It was not designed to be 100% sealed so throwing a filled mug into your backpack is a bad idea, and that applies to ANY mug. Secondly, no where does it say it is leak proof. It is spill resistant, meaning if you drop it, it will not splash all over the place. The design of the mug's spill resistance is also why you must tip the mug at a greater then 90 degree angle to drink from it. Yes, this can be annoying, but it is a small sacrifice for the spill resistance. The spill resistance does not mean some liquid won't come out when it is dropped. It just means it won't spill all over the place. A drizzle or so will flow. This is achieved with the lids special 360 degree flow opening. Tiny slits run around the entire lid when it is twisted open, thereby allowing you to drink from any part of the rim. These tiny slits prevent liquid from flowing profusely and in addition it keeps outside air exposure to a minimum, thereby keeping the liquid cooler or hotter, longer. The mug is easy to clean. Other users have complained about the smell or bacteria. I find the smell and bacteria problem inherent in EVERY insulated mug, not just this one, and it is usually because I get lazy and don't clean it out after every drink like I should. It's my own fault. Not the mug's. Anyone who drinks coffee regularly knows this. In the car, this mug is perfect. Unlike a regular paper cup or plain insulated mug, the handle-less design makes it easy to grip and find. In addition, the 360 degree drink lip keeps your eyes on the road instead of staring at the mug looking for the drink opening. Anyone who drinks beverages while driving will appreciate this feature all the more. The 360 degree drink lid can be twisted to "open" and "close" modes. "close" is used to keep liquids insulated for longer periods. The description of 3 hours hot and 4-6 hours cold is accurate. My cup of coffee can go 3 hours and remain relatively hot. In "open" mode, the coffe cools down, but after 3 hours, it is still very warm. This may not seem like much, but other insulated mugs I've used keep beverages hot for a maximum of an hour and by 3 hours, it's cold. So the insulating performance of the Nissan is superior. Another complaint addressed by users is that this twist top requires two hands and is detrimental while driving. While this is true, WHY WOULD YOU BE TWISTING THE TOP WHILE DRIVING? The insulating performance is good enough that you can keep it "open". I've driven long stretches across states and never had a problem. I also believe the low average rating on amazon stems from the high price. Compared to the 3.99 insulating mug you find at the dollar store, it looks expensive, but that 3.99 mug is no better then a ceramic one. Most good insulating mugs cost $15-$35. At $20-$25, the Nissan handily beats even the $35 I have used. It's not a bargain, but the best value for your money. You do get what you paid for and then some. I only gave it 4 stars because there are a few improvements that could be made. The lid can be made more leak resistance and it isn't clear if the different lid grooves require the lid to be affixed back on in a specific way. This is never explained. And a rubberized grip would help greatly.

The tumbler that I have is sold in various places as the '360-degree Dribble-Proof Tumbler', I am not sure if that is the same as the JMT401 but on paper the specs and features are the same. It is not a good design for car use. On the plus side I like the no-handle design and it has a small base which should fit most cupholders. On the down side you need 2 hands to twist the lid open or closed. Also the 'dribble-proof' design means that the mug has a very deep lip, and even when it is full you have to tip it far up and into your field of view to get the liquid flowing.
