I bought this filter, use the activated charchol and the water stays clean for about 3 days. At 1 week, its beyond dirty. I was looking for a filter that I could clean the tank about 2X a month. I have 1 6 in red ear slider in a 20 gal long tank. If anyone knows how to get better performance, PLEASE let me know!!!

I had this filter awhile back for my turtles, but they are bigger (one of them is 6-7 inches and the other is even bigger!). At first the filter worked pretty well....I can't say it was fantastic because, let's face it, turtles are way more messy than that small filter could handle! My turtles, being as large as they are, would knock it apart constantly! One swipe when they are moving around the tank and the tubes would be ripped off, making it not work right. After maybe a year, the filter died completely on me. If you have smaller turtles, and a really good set-up where they don't have any access to get near the tubing, I'm sure you will have better luck than I did. I'm now working on getting a setup with an undergravel filter and a large canister filter that cleans up to 100 gallons (my tank is 55 gallons and about 2/3 full with the basking area above). I read online that it is a fantastic setup, so we'll see!

Like many new turtles we came across ours by the children finding a baby one in the yard and then flashing big puppy eyes so I'd say yes. Now we have a turtle and then get an aquarium (used). It had an under gravel filter that I heard was bad for turtles so I ordered this online. I did partial water changes until it got here. I plan to replace the parts suggested to get the ammonia out, but as far as cleaning poo and gunk out this filter kicks butt. Also, it will reach into a low level of water which I like. We have it going on a 75 gallon tank half filled. Certainly worth the price. I may even get a second one if I decide to add more water (but I like seeing the turtle).
