Ideas For Making Your Home Winter-Ready
During the winter season, gas prices can go through the roof if you are a homeowner. However, keeping your furnace running at a high temperature is not the only way to keep your house warm. There are plenty of affordable tricks to keep the heat in and the cold air out.
Window treatment:
The type of curtains you use for your windows can affect the temperature in your home, especially if you have a lot of windows. The thicker the curtains, the better it is at insulating your home. A good length of 120 inch curtains is universal enough to fit most window sizes.
Weatherstripping:
- Pressure-sensitive adhesive-backed foam is the least expensive and easiest to install. Simply run it between any gaps that you feel cold air coming through.
- Felt is another inexpensive option that can be installed easily. Some disadvantages are that they are more visible and aren’t as effective for preventing wind flow. It also wears down easily with moisture and friction.
Conserve:
After you’ve weatherstripped your house, there are still more things you can do to maximize your dollar when keeping your house warm. We’ve all been told to “go green,” but it’s mostly been applied to recycling or reusing. Below are some tips I’ve used to keep my family warm through the winter season.
1. If everybody in your house either works or goes to school, have the last person who leaves the house turn off the heater. Your family can bear the hour it takes to reheat your whole house again.
2. Using electricity is cheaper than burning gas for your furnace. Invest in electric blankets for each member of your family so that you can turn off the furnace during the night too. These blankets are completely safe to use and will keep nice and toasty throughout the night.
3. Turning your thermometer down two degrees can also save you money on your gas bill.
